Understanding Basic Life Support (BLS)

Posted on Jan 03, 2025
Basic Life Support (BLS) provides healthcare professionals with essential skills to recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies. American Heart Association (AHA) BLS training focuses on early intervention, high-quality CPR, and effective teamwork to support patients experiencing cardiac arrest or other critical situations.
At Status CPR Training, we offer practical instruction designed to help participants develop the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively in an emergency.
What Is Basic Life Support?
Basic Life Support is a set of emergency care skills used to support a person experiencing cardiac arrest or other life-threatening conditions. BLS training prepares healthcare providers to recognize emergencies, activate the emergency response system, and begin appropriate interventions.
AHA BLS courses emphasize prompt action, high-quality CPR, effective ventilation, and coordinated responses among rescuers. These skills are important for healthcare professionals working in hospitals, clinics, and other patient care environments.
Essential BLS Skills
BLS training combines essential knowledge with hands-on practice. Participants learn to perform high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants, provide appropriate ventilation, and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Training also covers recognizing emergencies, responding to choking, and working effectively as part of a resuscitation team. Practical exercises help participants develop proper techniques and improve communication during emergency situations.
Classroom and Blended Learning Options
BLS training may be available through classroom-based courses or blended learning, depending on the course format offered.
The AHA HeartCode BLS option combines online learning with a required hands-on skills session. Participants complete the online portion and then demonstrate their practical skills in person according to the course requirements.
At Status CPR Training, we offer training solutions designed to accommodate different schedules and learning preferences. Contact us to discuss available classes and find the option that meets your needs.
BLS Course Completion
To receive an AHA BLS course completion eCard, participants must successfully complete all required components of the applicable course. The specific requirements depend on the course format and include demonstrating the necessary knowledge and practical skills.
AHA BLS course completion eCards are generally valid for two years. Healthcare professionals should check their employer's policies and applicable requirements to determine when they need to renew their training.
Status CPR Training makes learning practical and engaging, helping participants strengthen their emergency response skills through expert instruction and hands-on practice.
